Basic Social Networking 101 for Non-Geeks

In this modern world, everybody seems to have at least one account in social networking sites. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, TweetDeck, name it and more likely, many people will tell you that you should add them as your contacts. If you are one of those who are not really adept in using the social networking sites, you must not feel ashamed. Instead, you should find ways to broaden your knowledge and improve your skills when it comes to socializing with people online. Of course, it doesn’t take rocket science to know the basic concepts in social networking. You just have to be patient and willing.

Here is a rundown of some smart tips you can use to enhance your social networking life.

Know first the important things about the social site. Before you click on that “sign-up” button, make sure to do some research first to know the basic features and the nature of the specific social networking site you intend to join. After all, you would not want to end up using a site that only causes you headaches, right?

Only add the people that you know. There is nothing wrong in being congenial but as a popular saying goes, “Too much of something is bad”. So quit clicking on that “add as friend” button and only add those people you know to keep yourself from adding strangers that might turn into stalkers.

Personal information must never be broadcast. If you want to maintain a peaceful life, veer away from publishing your contact number, home or office address and other pieces of information that might be used to cause you problems. Unless you have a business you want to promote, better keep your information private.

Don’t sell and send spam. Do you know what online users hate the most? Spams and flooding of advertisements in their personal accounts. Not everybody is interested in buying stuff, and not everyone likes to read nonsense messages so keep yourself from being too giddy you should go lightly on the commerce mode.

Avoid being too negative and emo online. People already have a lot of problems, and they cannot afford to have more on a daily basis. You can vent out on your account, but make sure that you don’t do it every day, every hour, every minute. Your friends might opt to click the “unfriend” button.

Be polite. Respect begets respect, so if you want to garner polite comments, be good in giving out too.

You do not have to be a geek in order to understand the basics of social networking. Since these sites are now used as tool to meet and connect with people from around the world, it is important that you know how to use them properly.
